Arlis’s Restaurant Bellingham

I spent the entire morning playing. It’s hard work, but sometimes school volunteering is tough. And I got to take the 5 year old with me. She was hesitant once she stepped outside to 46 degrees and drizzle (on June 10?), but the trooper in her came out. She, too, believes in the hard work of play. We lucked out and the drizzle abated and she got to play floor hockey as much as she wanted. (It was Play Day at the Carl Cozier Elementary School.)

And then lunch time rolled around. She suggested a restaurant. She and I are going to enjoy being grown-ups together. Off we went to Arlis’s Restaurant where ‘Breakfast Anytime’ is the motto on their sign.

It is a diner in the true old fashioned sense. Simple, clean and good eats. They have lots to pick from on the menu. We ordered the chicken finger and fries and a Mariner Melt: tuna with grilled onions and mushrooms and cheese on grilled sourdough. I also got their homemade baked beans and a side of onion rings.

The kids’ food disappeared after a huge portion of onion rings. We really liked the onion rings (it was her first time). They were fresh with crunch to spare. Her chicken was spicy, just the way she likes it. My tuna melt was really delicious and hot. The homemade baked beans were excellent. They weren’t mushy and they tasted chocolaty and sweet with onions and small firm chunks of bacon. Very good.

Now, the placard next to the front door says ‘homemade pies’. Not going home without a taste of one. We picked cherry pie warmed with vanilla ice cream on the side (wasn’t sure how much would be shared). And, yes, this pie was homemade fantastic! The crust was light, flaky and latticed letting big delicious cherries pop through. It was nice and tart, and only a little sweet. Wonderful.

There was some left for at home sharing (and the takeout container was recyclable cardboard – not foam!). When we got home my partner was just taking a food break. What luck! The container was emptied right there and then. And I quote: ‘I just knew that Arlis’s would be a good place to eat. Are you going to write about it, or keep this one a secret?’ Well, now you know.

Robeks in Sehome Village

I think a smoothie is like a healthy slurpee. It can be an energizing snack or a dessert.

At Robek’s I can get a high protein dairy free smoothie and feel satisfied. Or I can get their Outrageous Raspberry for a treat. Either way, I’m a happy camper.

When I’m looking for SOLID food their wraps are fresh and tasty. But that’s just an FYI.

On Rice, Bellingham Thai Restaurant

Tea was introduced to the West during the British exploration of the Orient. Teas, spices and silks were valuable commodities. I, too, value the quality of my tea. I have a favorite spot in Bellingham to share.

Today, Wendy and I went to On Rice in Barkley for lunch. Thai decor on the walls and the servers catering to a business clientele. We ordered 2 combos: Emperor’s Cashew and Garlic Delight. Emperor’s Cashew is chicken with cashews and vegetables (Wendy’s favorite). Garlic Delight is garlic with beef, Thai soy sauce, black pepper and cilantro served on a bed of steamed broccoli. It was way too salty for me. The Pad Thai noodles were delicious.

However, the best part of my meal was the tea. I would go to this restaurant regularly if just for the tea. There is a nice selection, all Thai. I drank the Haiku Herbal Tea. The tea was served in a french press ready for my plunge. Lemon balm, ginseng and herbs. It was fantastic.

A couple of months from now school will be back in session…no peanut gallery to attend to. I will be back.

Donut shops in Bellingham WA

Growing up in Queens (NY), a regular trek to Dunkin’ Donuts was the norm. My Mom, sister and I would walk the mile, sit, eat, talk and walk the mile back home. The ONLY way for us to justify all we ate.

After transplanting to Northern NJ, Krispy Kreme, aaaah…but there was no walking. No comment.

Now, here I am in the Great Pacific Northwest and what should I find? Within walking distance is Lafeen‘s Donuts. Lafeen’s has been around for a long time. Quiet, relaxed, picnic tables with table clothes and so many different yummy donuts. The kids and I like to spend quality time together there after running wild at Whatcom Falls Park across the street. Just continuing a family tradition…

And then, last year, another donut shop opened up. This one in downtown Bellingham: Rocket Donuts.

Well, I know a 5 year old who likes to go there just for the posters and talking ROBOT. They have a whole sci-fi theme going with Buck Rogers on the screen. The kid didn’t even like donuts. Well, my daughter and I made up for that. The all time favorite was at Valentine’s Day. The donut had a chocolate covered cherry in its hole. Rocket Donuts doesn’t just bake dozens of ‘regular’ donuts, they make ‘holiday’ ones too. Yum…

Swan Cafe in Bellingham Co-op

Had some major shopping to do at the Bellingham Co-op this am. I forgot to eat breakfast before dropping kids off at school. You know what Oprah says about going food shopping when you’re hungry: DON’T!

Well, I solved that problem by just eating breakfast at the Swan Cafe in the Co-op. I’m good at solving problems. My daughter and I shared a delicious eggs and bacon stuffed buckwheat crepe. It came with a fruit salad which she commandeered immediately. I have to be honest: I have enjoyed everything I’ve ever eaten at the Swan Cafe. It’s like a favorite stumble home bar – perfect.

Of course, for lunch I took home the cabbage piroshki (my all time favorite).

As you’ll learn, I adore cabbage. I am a foodie of discerning taste.
