Shut your pie hole

We all went to Boxx Berry Farm in Ferndale today. It was raspberry festival time and it was alot of fun.

The best part was the raspberry sundaes. Their raspberry syrup with ice cream from Edaleen Dairy is delicious. The Farm also had barrel rides for kiddies, a tractor ride through the farm (ate carrots just pulled from the ground thanks to Mike), face painting and animal balloons. What family with young children could ask for more?

We bought half a flat of raspberries and they were gone by the next evening. My partner kept reminding us the raspberries only last one or two days. So, of course, the four of us listened and polished them off.

Boxx Berry Farms has a Market store where they sell produce and pies. I bought some Ranier cherries (almost gone) and vegetables. My partner bought some potatoes and onions and pie. Which brings me to the blog title. He bought a strawberry rhubarb pie from Barb’s Pies & Pastries. Strawberry rhubarb is my favorite and I was so looking forward to a slice for lunch. We had bought her pies at the farm last year and were very satisfied. This time it was good, but different. My ten year old son said the crust was too hard and the filling jelly (he’s the official pie maker for my pie hole). Not what we remembered it to be. This, however, didn’t stop us from eating it…

The family went on the tractor ride with Farmer Mike. We got to listen to his great spiel (his word) about the farm and ate some fresh picked carrots (he also picked an onion along the way). I told Mike the farm should have an onion festival to go along with the strawberry and corn (I love onions as much as cabbage). He seemed to like the idea and gave me the onion (walla walla). We had fried onion rings that night.

Mike said I could be a twin for Karol at Joe’s Garden. I’ll have to take another look. She gives us fresh picked carrots, too.

Avenue Bread & Cafe: Downtown Bellingham, Fairhaven & Sunnyland

I buy a lot of bread. A grilled cheese sandwich = 2 slices x 5 people. You get the idea. Avenue Bread bakes delicious bread. They have some competition, but that’s what keeps them all on their toes.

We like the French Italian and the Rye. We are an opened-minded family. The crust is firm and the inside soft. However, the draw might forever be the beautiful acapella I’ve heard from a guy wearing an apron. A man who sings, bakes and serves. Perfection.

Avenue Bread offers breakfast and lunch – very fresh with delicious combinations of ingredients. Don’t pass on the desserts, you’ll be sorry.

Note: Avenue Bread is listed on our Bagels in Bellingham page.

FYI:   Avenue Bread 2 for $3 @ Grocery Outlet

The Daisy Cafe

Children are very hungry and calm after a swim lesson. It’s a wonderful thing to see.

I decided to treat them to lunch out.

A friend recommended The Daisy Cafe to me awhile back and I trust her judgment. So down to Magnolia we went. The Daisy Cafe is open for breakfast and lunch – a good time to go out with kids. Their menu is varied, which means I get lots of choices. That’s when I ask about the special. I like to test the creativity of the kitchen. The special was a Hawaiian sandwich: grilled ham and cheese with pineapple on Breadfarm grilled bread. Needless to say, when my daughter saw what I got, she had to have some (I’ve done that to my partner since forever, so it is genetic). I ordered a side of coleslaw which could only have been fresher in my own kitchen. The meal was VERY satisfying and tasty. My girl agreed. That is, after she polished off her junior cheese pizza. It was yummy; a bit too cheesy for me, but perfect for my kids (my son ordered a junior pepperoni).

My kids were so happy at The Daisy Cafe they kept sneaking waves and smiles at the server. She was above and beyond nice. The restaurant is bright and cheery and clean. And it serves those perfect cupcakes we’ve eaten at the Bellingham Farmer’s Market, too.

Must go back for breakfast.

The Woods #6 (coffee house)

We went on an expedition today to find a pirate ship we could board and commandeer. The starting point was Fairhaven Village Green. Can you guess where we ended our search? The playground at Boulevard Park.

It’s an easy trek if you’re alone; however, if you have a few children it can be an expedition. Lots of fun!

The Woods6 have taken up residence at Boulevard Park and I permitted sampling. Warning: expensive.

We enjoyed smoothies apiece (when did a slurpee start costing $4?) and cookies and scones. It was ok.

But now begins our smoothie sampling campaign…read Semiahmoo Marina Store.
