Avenue Bread & Cafe: Downtown Bellingham, Fairhaven & Sunnyland

I buy a lot of bread. A grilled cheese sandwich = 2 slices x 5 people. You get the idea. Avenue Bread bakes delicious bread. They have some competition, but that’s what keeps them all on their toes.

We like the French Italian and the Rye. We are an opened-minded family. The crust is firm and the inside soft. However, the draw might forever be the beautiful acapella I’ve heard from a guy wearing an apron. A man who sings, bakes and serves. Perfection.

Avenue Bread offers breakfast and lunch – very fresh with delicious combinations of ingredients. Don’t pass on the desserts, you’ll be sorry.

Note: Avenue Bread is listed on our Bagels in Bellingham page.

The Daisy Cafe

Children are very hungry and calm after a swim lesson. It’s a wonderful thing to see.

I decided to treat them to lunch out.

A friend recommended The Daisy Cafe to me awhile back and I trust her judgment. So down to Magnolia we went. The Daisy Cafe is open for breakfast and lunch – a good time to go out with kids. Their menu is varied, which means I get lots of choices. That’s when I ask about the special. I like to test the creativity of the kitchen. The special was a Hawaiian sandwich: grilled ham and cheese with pineapple on Breadfarm grilled bread. Needless to say, when my daughter saw what I got, she had to have some (I’ve done that to my partner since forever, so it is genetic). I ordered a side of coleslaw which could only have been fresher in my own kitchen. The meal was VERY satisfying and tasty. My girl agreed. That is, after she polished off her junior cheese pizza. It was yummy; a bit too cheesy for me, but perfect for my kids (my son ordered a junior pepperoni).

My kids were so happy at The Daisy Cafe they kept sneaking waves and smiles at the server. She was above and beyond nice. The restaurant is bright and cheery and clean. And it serves those perfect cupcakes we’ve eaten at the Bellingham Farmer’s Market, too.

Must go back for breakfast.

Ye Olde Northwest Foodie Blog

Just discovered the Old Northwest Fodie blog, via a link in the Bellingham Herald. Lane Morgan writes this off-beat and wholseome local foods blog, from the heart:

When I first started writing about local seasonal food, twenty years ago, I lived on a homestead, raised my own meat and vegetables, and wanted to spread the word about the Pacific Northwest farm economy and the joys of local produce in season. I wrote and edited regional cookbooks. Now I live in town, grow a smattering of fruits and vegetables, and the buzz is about local foodshed eating and carbon neutral diets.

Semiahmoo Marina Store

Water wind rocks and bald eagles best describes our experience on Semiahmoo Spit. See page 50 of Hiking Whatcom County by Ken Wilcox for this expedition and many others.

The Semiahmoo Marina Store is a stop for boating needs and hiking snacks. They serve Starbucks and smoothies. The smoothies were $3.75 and mango based – very yummy. Two peach and one raspberry were thick and refreshing.

The kids want to go back to Semiahmoo Spit again at the same time to walk under the bare tree the bald eagle perches on. Did I mention the swooping eagle at Birch Bay I thought would carry off my youngest?

The Woods #6 (coffee house)

We went on an expedition today to find a pirate ship we could board and commandeer. The starting point was Fairhaven Village Green. Can you guess where we ended our search? The playground at Boulevard Park.

It’s an easy trek if you’re alone; however, if you have a few children it can be an expedition. Lots of fun!

The Woods6 have taken up residence at Boulevard Park and I permitted sampling. Warning: expensive.

We enjoyed smoothies apiece (when did a slurpee start costing $4?) and cookies and scones. It was ok.

But now begins our smoothie sampling campaign…read Semiahmoo Marina Store.
