Fairhaven Pizza Company

It has been outrageously beautiful in Bellingham. Sun, warmth, everything blooming. On Saturday the Bellingham Community Boating Center had an open house with free boating and instruction. They cater to people who like to get on the water in a kayak, canoe or a sailboat under 26 feet. My older son has been sailing on the bay and lakes in smaller sailboats for a few years now and as soon as the wind and clouds start looking good to him in the Spring, he has sailing on the brain. So, an open house at a new place was just the cure. He and his brother had a blast! After signing a waiver, they were off and sailing with a crew on a 17 foot sailboat for the afternoon. Clearly a different experience from sailing bytes and lasers by yourself! Remember:  the most important part of the boat is the drain PLUG!

When they were all done and sailed out, we agreed they could walk up to Fairhaven Pizza Company and get a late lunch. I’m sure they were purposeful and proud as they strode up Harris and over to the pizza place. They said they were treated ‘FANTASTIC’. They were very well respected and devoured some delicious pizza. My boys are 13 and 11 years old. They have been to Fairhaven Pizza many times with the family. They have received free personal size pizza‘s as rewards from the Library summer reading program coupon the owner generously donates. He is Tom Traibush and I think he has a great personality, not to mention outstanding foods!

I don’t see kids handling themselves around Bellingham/Fairhaven much, but I was taking my 3 year old sister to Pizzarama when I was 11. It was a 7 block walk and I had $2 to buy us each a slice, drink and Italian ice. And that was in NYC. It’s still there – 3715 Francis Lewis Blvd, Flushing (no jokes allowed). Time for the kids to take back the pizza place. I think the previous generation was at the burger joint? the soda fountain? Just trimming the apron strings…

The Temple Bar, Bellingham WA

The Temple Bar has a laid back atmosphere with french kitchen work tables and mismatched chairs in two separate but adjoining rooms. Small curved bar in one room, live music stage in the other and attentive service. I like simple drinks. I am low maintenance, but with high standards. I ordered a caipirinha and a pot of herbal tea. My companion had a port. Simple enough. We added the pistachio bowl (served warm), took a seat by the window; we like views, any kind will do.

Port is no challenge; poured from a bottle. The caipirinha recipe was palatable, but not my favorite (my favorite was at Sensa which closed this year). I have provided another caipirinha recipe for comparison in a separate post. Try it , you may like it better…

The Temple Bar has become one of the good places to recharge in Bellingham. Live music, good drinks and a varied Italian menu: roasted garlic, salumi starters along with cheese, fruit or meat plates, salads and paninis.

I look forward to a Raindrop with my pot of herbal next time we steal out. Raindrop = blueberry stolichnaya, lemon, sugar rim.

PS Lots of vegan offerings, Wendy. Happy New Year! 11/26/08

Torre Caffe Italiano Bellingham WA

I’ve been here before. I wanted to revisit for lunch.

I was looking for meatball paninni and discovered pesto lasagna. Oh, how delicious. There were many layers of pasta and pesto with little green beans peppered in topped with pignoli nuts. The portion was huge. It came with a fresh spring salad with walnuts and cranberries, shaved parmigiano-reggiano on top (Italian vinaigrette of course). I saved half for dinner and shared with my son. He is now a lasagna lover, too.

I will report again from Torre Caffe when I have room dessert.

Ciao

Torre Caffe Italiano

Mary, I chose Torre Caffe Italiano as my birthday breakfast treat.

Beautiful Italian music wafted through the air outside the caffe; a traditional draw for street passerby. I sat outside in a wrought iron chair in the sun waiting for Wendy to share the experience.

We both ate the veggie breakfast meal: toasted rosemary english muffin with egg cheese tomato and pesto (no pesto for Wendy). It was simply the perfect taste and portion for breakfast (served by my mother, oops, Mary’s mother). I had a pot of Numi tea and Wendy had the best cup of coffee she’s ever had in Bellingham.

That should say it all.

The caffe is clean and cozy with warm earthy colors throughout. The best part for me is the owners’ Italian accent. I am in NYC again. Amen.

I will be going back to sample LUNCH (lasagna) and dessert (cannoli).
