Best Caipirinha in Bellingham, WA

A lovely drink = Brazil.

It is made with cachaca: pronounced kah-SHAH-sah.

Caipirinha

Adapted from Cafe Atlantico, Washington

2 limes each cut lengthwise into eighths; 4 tablespoons superfine sugar; 8 ounces cachaca

1. Place four lime pieces in a 9-ounce rocks glass and sprinkle with 1 tablespoon sugar. With a wooden spoon, muddle lime and sugar for about 30 seconds to release oils in lime skin; do not crush lime.

2. Fill the glass with ice cubes and add 2 ounces cachaca. Cover with the lid of a cocktail shaker, and shake vigorously for 30 seconds. Serve in the same glass. Repeat to make 4 drinks.

This, my favorite drink, is vegan.

  1. I love caipirinhas. My first was in Brasil, at the famous Marius in Rio (www.marius.com.br). Would you believe my host put three teaspoons of white sugar into his caipirinha, after it was served?

  2. In ’95 I went to an NACB conference at Western Washington University. When the Best Western shuttle drove us to our hotel, I asked what she recommended I do in Bellingham.

“All that you gotta know about Bellingham is this,” she said. “There’s always a bar a five-minute walk away… and a twenty-minute stumble back.”

    I never forgot it.

Glad to see y’all have discovered the caipirinha!
