Barlean’s Salmon

The Community Food Co-op at the Cordata Store held a wonderful event today. It was a BBQ For Literacy. They served a $3 BBQ with $1 donated to the Whatcom Literacy Council. There was a free book swap, live music (Kevin has MUCH talent) and almost a dozen authors open to discussion. Weather was sunny breezy and the food great!

You wonder:  what am I going to eat for $3? WELL, you had a choice of a Hempler hotdog, a tofu dog, 2 BBQ chicken legs (big) or grilled Barlean’s salmon. The side was potato chips and FRESH cole slaw (big servings).  I told the server the only time I get Barlean’s salmon is in a bottle with lemon swirl! She had a good laugh. The salmon was delicious as was everything else;  I had 3 serious food critics with me – my kids – who told me so.

We ate good food, were entertained, checked out some books and authors and even got some fancy calligraphy bookmarks. All in all, a perfect family outing.

Now if you missed this event, don’t despair. There will be 2 more in July and August. I’ll be there with kids in tow…

Scharffen Berger Chocolate

Filed under: Bellingham local,local,Pacific Northwest,Seattle — Tags: , , , , , — Bellinghamster @ 11:51 am

My home is well stocked with staples: milk, eggs, bread and chocolate. I can see you smiling. No chocolate in your house? I’m sorry…but, chocolate = love = happiness. End of story.

The chocolate staple in my home is Scharffen Berger. I was introduced to Scharffen Berger chocolate by Helen Gustafson in her book The Agony of the Leaves: The Ecstasy of My Life With Tea. It is a compilation of her ‘tea’ anecdotes and many scrumptious ‘tea’ recipes. Scharffen Berger is her preferred chocolate in recipes and eating it straight, as I do, it is no wonder. I have the semisweet 60% cacao dark chocolate. The chocolate bar is in six pieces imprinted with a graceful goat on a mountain and 3 stars above it. It has a subtle chocolate smell with a hint of coffee and vanilla. It tastes rich and creamy and, of course, like chocolate!

Ingredients: cacao beans, sugar, cocoa butter, non-gmo soy lecithin and whole vanilla beans. Vegan anyone?

Scharffen Berger has a sister brand: Dagoba. I have seen this chocolate at the Community Food Co-op and Terra Organica and Bargainica. I’ll share my experience with this chocolate soon.

Silver Springs Creamery

There has always been one ice cream vendor at the Bellingham Farmer’s Market on Saturdays. This year I noticed another: Silver Springs Creamery. They are known for their cheese and now I search for them for their ice creams and sorbets. They taste even better than what we make at home (their recipe must have more cream in it than ours).

The Mom and daughter team (I think) help me with my choices each week with big smiles. This week I bought five different flavors: vanilla and strawberry ice cream, orange, grapefruit, key-lime sorbet. Too good, I tell you.

And if I miss them at the Farmer’s Market, Silver Springs is sold at the Community Food Co-op. Lucky me.
