Rocket Donuts

The Rocket Donut special is a cinnamon s’more donut. Celebrate Donut Day and patronize your local donut shop. You’ll get some fresh donuts, coupons for freebies and rocket keychains. And you’ll be happy to know 5% of all sales are donated to Salvation Army.

This isn’t a new tradition. As the story goes…it all began in August, 1917:  WWI, fighting in France, rations low. The Salvation Army gals made donuts from staples on hand to sustain the troops. Of course, they became hugely popular – both the girls and the donuts. War ends, soldiers go back to America and demand donuts. Bakeries comply with the help of the Salvation Army. So you see, the Salvation Army and donuts are tight. Might not even HAVE donuts in the US if not for them.

As it stands today, the Salvation Army will provide free coffee and donuts to our Rescue Heroes, those they save and all in need. Cool.

You can find an original donut recipe on the Salvation Army website, and a here’s list of donut shops in Bellingham.

Ralf’s Pretzel Bakery Bellingham

There is one vendor NEVER bypassed at the Bellingham Farmer’s Market: it’s  Ralf’s Bavarian Pretzels. How can you choose? -salami/swiss/cream cheese on a pretzel bun, a Nutella sandwich stick, a cheese stick and pretzels big and small. My daughter discovered Nutella at the store and pleaded I buy some (of course I’ve known about Nutella all my life – I was just trying to keep it out of the house).

For the past few years I wished they had a storefront open during the week I could go to with my children. This month my wish came true! Ralf’s Pretzel Bakery is open in the Market Depot and looks great.

I wonder if they’ll get a liquor license so I could have some beer with my pretzel…

Icing on the Cake, Bellingham

Icing on the Cake serves fresh baked gourmet cupcakes. We had the pleasure of indulging at the Bellingham Farmers Market today. We sampled many a dish, but icing on the Cake warranted its own spotlight.

My partner and I had ‘black and white’ cupcakes and the kids all chose pink ‘peppermint’ cupcakes.

The black and white is dark chocolate cake with buttercream frosting with dark Belgian chocolate drizzled on top. The peppermint is dark chocolate cake with peppermint schnapps buttercream frosting.

Still with me? Because I was at a loss for words to describe how divine these cupcakes were. My oldest, however, after his first bite said: ‘heaven’. We all agreed Elizabeth Kovacs (traditional Hungarian name) should be strongly encouraged to gift us with a brick and mortar bakery we could be loyal to.

The last time I was this satisfied with a dessert I still lived back East and C. Marretta Bakery on Bell Boulevard in Bayside, NY was the place. Will anyone open a storefront in Bellingham with real cannoli and rainbow cookies?
