Oh where oh where did Shahrazad go? Oh where oh where could it be?
Try the Farmer’s Market, because now there’s a place called Bowl ‘n Roll in it’s real estate at 207 W Holly St.

Show me someone who doesn’t crave Chinese food and I’ll show you someone not open to culinary adventure.
Dad needed a culinary adventure tonight and called me for suggestions. I offered chicken parmesan or spaghetti with meatballs, but I heard hesitation. So I said, “How about Chinese?’ and we were off. We went to Xing’s Panda Palace and feasted on pupu platter, green jade shrimp, shredded beef szechuan style and shrimp lo mein. Half way through the pupu platter, I realized something was missing.
What ever happened to the crispy wonton strips and duck sauce that used to be waiting on the table when first seated (sliced, deep fried wonton wraps)? I grew up in Bayside, NY. A place where if there wasn’t a pizza place on the corner, there was a Chinese restaurant (or a bar). And each restaurant had its own trademark fried wonton strips: some wide, some thin, some crisp, some crunchy, sometimes stale.
But, could you imagine sitting down in a Mexican restaurant and not being served tortilla chips and salsa? Well, now that I’ve noticed, I’m going to investigate. I hope it doesn’t have anything to do with trans-fats, because it would be stupid to worry about FAT during a chopstick craving.
BelleWood Acres is an apple farm in Ferndale, Washington. They have a booth at the Saturday Bellingham Farmer’s Market and it’s not just apples you’ll find there. Oh, no. You’ll find peanut butter, ground fresh on their farm, honey, jams, cookies and homemade PIE. Taste test time…
Their pies are made by Heather using BelleWood Acres apples. She slices them thin and layers them with spices sandwiched between a very good crust. The pie is good hot or cold (of course I’ve had more than one piece). So many ways to make pie.
I’ve been told Heather is the dessert queen for Book Fare. Book Fare is the cafe upstairs from Village Books. If you haven’t treated yourself to a date there, you’ve been amiss. The view alone is worth the trip: water, islands, boats and sky.
Now that I know the quality of those desserts, I’ll eat those along with the delicious all day fare.
I’ve been curious about Shahrazad‘s for quite some time. Tucked away on Holly between metal & tats and brews in the old Mallard’s footprint, it’s easy to miss. But I’m lucky because I can experience their Persian cuisine at the Saturday Bellingham Farmer’s Market.
The big plate offerings vary week to week at the Market and pleases the explorer in me. Today’s combo was chicken tenders (soooo fresh and crunchy), 18 hour BBQ beef brisket (gave Speak E-Z’s a run for the money) and vegan red beans and rice (sauteed with onion and garlic) with a salad. I was cheshire (as in cat) for the rest of the day.
Right now, today, Shahrazad is my favorite restaurant in Bellingham. I thanked the cook profusely for cooking for me (it was Sunday dinner as a kid – fully satiated).
She (Danielle Kuzemzadeh) makes falafel, too. That’s next on my list.

I’ve been car shopping. I saw you make that face. Yep, it’s like Robin Williams in the coffee aisle having a heart attack over the selection (Moscow On the Hudson).
Well, RJ, the Wilson Toyota car dealer, was Mr. no pressure and great company. We started talking food: the lack of a really good Jewish deli in Bellingham and his favorite place for lasagna, Mambo Italiano. I ate at Mambo Italiano with Wendy during the Fairhaven pink shopping days event last year. The service was friendly and the food very good. Wendy and I had a great time what with all the women out and about, fashion shows wandering past the tables – a general sense of revelry.
Now, I’ll have to revisit the restaurant to test RJ’s opinion. After all, he let me test drive 2 Toyotas with a really happy kindergartener in the back. What a guy.
